The REST API provides a simple framework for exposing the data within Joomla to be used by other applications. It works like a bridge between your Joomla site and any other non-Joomla application that needs to access data from your Joomla website.
For instance, some mobile applications are dependent or use data from other web applications. To make this easy and in a standardized way, the Joomla Rest API is used. It’s targeted mainly at developers, who would want to write custom plugins to make the data from other components available via an API.
Non-developers would mainly want to install this to enable the existing plugins so that they work with mobile applications.
A few of the mobile applications powered by the Rest API -
The Blog App – A mobile app to browse your Easyblog powered blogs
Reportoise App – E-Commerce reporting application for IOS and Android. Works with several Joomla extensions
JTicketing Event Manager’s App for IOS and Android
Other places where the API is used in production -
-Health Care Social Network with API integration having real time monitoring systems
-Agriculture focused Social Network with several web applications exchanging data
-Agricultural Warehouse system reporting engine
-Push to Live for Joomla : Joomla Staging review for content and extension installations, updates and Push to live post review
